Markets:
Panania Markets – 8th July
Our July market had 25 stalls in operation. Thea had been working hard to get several new and different stalls to keep our market fresh. A reasonable crowd came out to buy meaning we achieved a good financial result.

Panania Markets – 12th August
Thanks to all the club members who stepped up to assist Thea in the absence of Ross.
We had 24 stalls with three new recruits - Gemma’s Crafts & Baby clothing, Knot & Burl Woodwork who sold beautiful timber tables & cabinets and Sarah Succulents all of whom did well and are coming back in September.

Bunnings Padstow – 23rd July
The Onion Cutting Club of Ken McMillan, Allyn Waters, Ross Mackinnon and Ross Smith set a new record in processing 22kg of onions in 1hour 10 minutes on the Saturday before the BBQ. A great trading day gave our Treasurer reason to smile! Thanks to all the helpers and new faces for their time on the day.

Lamb Jumpers 2023

Our lamb jumper knitters continue to be very busy with a further 45 jumpers from the East Hills View Club, 5 more by Barbara Waters and 4 from a Probus knitter. Thea Davies has posted the 54 jumpers to Coonabarabran. So, along with the 100 jumpers sent off in June, we have supplied over 150 jumpers so far this year. Well done knitters!
If you would like the pattern for the lamb jumper please let Ross know and he will email you the pattern.

End Trachoma – Combined Next Generation & Community Project - Thea Davies
Thea received the news that our 12 family Trachoma kits arrived intact in Alice Springs in mid-July and are being distributed to the families soon. Its good know that we have played a part in reducing this horrible disease.

CB Council Mayor’s Light’s Out Sleepout – 12th August

Canterbury Bankstown Council Event’s Team asked our club to operate a Breakfast BBQ at the Mayor’s Light’s Out Sleepout Event at Bankstown Airport. Over 30 Community leaders and local CEO’s joined Mayor Bilal El-Hayek to brave a cold night under cardboard shelter to raise funds for people experiencing homelessness with funds going to Mission Australia. A small BBQ team lead by Paul McCarthy, with Allyn Waters and friends Paul Fitzsimmons and Mick Millen set up the BBQ and started cooking at 5.30am. The event raised over $28,500 for Mission Australia. The club received a donation of $500 for our services which we have donated to the Mayor’s Lights Out Sleepout to Mission Australia cause.

Padstow North Public School’s New Garden – 9th & 10th August
Our association with Bunnings Padstow is growing well, if you pardon the pun.
Sarah Oldfield, Activities Officer at Padstow Bunnings, recently approached Allyn Waters to see if our club was interested in helping the Bunnings Community Team install a new garden area and shed at Padstow North Public School.

On Wednesday 9th August, Paul McCarthy and Tony Luck toiled away clearing the area and installing the timber frames ready for the Thursday team comprising Ann & Paul Laverty and Allyn Waters to finish the gravel pathways and erect the raised garden beds and plant some vegies with the kids.

Allyn was seconded to assembling a garden shed with the School’s Deputy Head Carlie, which will store the tools and garden supplies donated by Bunnings.

Thursday’s Team- Bunnings Team in red Shirts, Deputy Principal Carlie in Blue T shirt, a parent, Allyn & Ann, a grandparent and parent. Where is Paul Laverty- he taking the photo of course!!

100 Trees Celebrating 100 Years of Rotary in Australia – Paul Laverty
Congratulations, Paul Laverty for steering the planting of 100 Trees to Celebrate 100 Years of Rotary in Australia project to its completion with CB Council, culminating in the grand unveiling of a plaque in Amour Park Revesby on 25th August 2023.

The CB Council Events team organised a grand ceremony in Amour Park with a welcome to country, a smoking ceremony and speeches by Mayor Bilal El Hayek, Tonia Barnes District Governor, President Charles Mille and Paul Laverty.

The contribution of Rotary to the world, the Australian Community not only over the past 100 years was acknowledged by the Mayor and the heartfelt thank you by the Mayor to Rotary and our club was greatly appreciated by our club members in attendance.

We are certainly off to a busy start to our new Rotary Year 2023-2024.Thanks to everyone who has helped out.

Christmas Tree Update – Ross
In early July, Ross noticed new signs along Henry Lawson Drive about Stage 1B Upgrade of Henry Lawson Drive (HLD). Online plans showed that our tree site would be a water collection basin as HLD increased to two lanes each direction from Flower Power to the M5. Was our Christmas Tree sale site at Bullecourt Ave going to be available to use this year?

Ross then contacted Transport NSW to find out details of the Stage 1b and its impact our site and when work would start etc. What a relief, luckily the work for stage 1b is still in the planning stage with community consultation taking place with final plans yet to be approved and no funding for the project approved as yet and when approved, construction is not expected to commence till 2026.

Once this was established, next step was to get approval and the permit from CB Council to use the park this year – job done! Insurance proforma written and sent to District Insurance Officer for the project – job done. Finally get the tree prices and work out our order with our tree team for 2023 and place the order – job done!

So at this stage we are on track for our annual Christmas Tree Sales on Saturday 9th December in the usual spot.

Vocational Service - Paul McCarthy
RESCA was a great evening thanks to Tony Luck and the District 9675 Vocational team. Many Emergency Services personnel, were awarded for their
efforts to keep the community safe in 2022. Unfortunately, our local nominee
John Lennox was unsuccessful.

RYVA - Veronica and Keith are finalising plans for RYVA to be held on Sept 12 at Bass High School. This night recognises senior students excelling at their chosen vocational training program eg IT, Construction, Hospitality.

Our “friends of” program has managed to gain interest from the CB Chamber of Commerce, CEO Wally Mehanna and Jasmine Theophore (Gordana's
daughter). We look forward to inviting them to a meeting/induction.
Keep up to date with vocational visits & other club events on Club Runner.
